AlainRacette's Fanart
Decided to try my hand at fanart recently and... once you get the basic shapes of the characters down, it's not so bad! I've struggled with sketching for the longest time and I THINK I'm finally getting it. It's all about the fundamentals and technical aspects - once that's mastered, creativity and experimentation is next
That said... here is my first Helga. Everything for me is done by hand since sketching on a computer just doesn't feel "right" to me (and the programs have a learning curve I don't have time for because of work), so don't judge me on that
She's holding her locket - I HATE hands lol. Something I whipped up in about 15 minutes when I got the head shape down; the body is pretty simple. The hands took FOREVER in comparison - I'm looking to cut down the time to draw her and then experiment with different poses. Enjoy!

Aw! This is adorable! Her expression is so wonderfully goofy--or should I say sappy? So cute.
Also, I completely agree on hands being evil. It took me ages to learn how to draw them and even now I struggle to draw them in advanced (i.e., anything that isn't completely basic) positions. Hands are the worst.

Very good! Agreed on hands...I'm starting to draw them and it's very hard to get them right even with practice.

Helga looks pretty cute in this (I love it!!) and I really agree with you on hands, they are extremely hard (unless you use a reference pic and it is still hard but not that much) >_<

W-WHAT?! I ought to sue you for slander, lady! I would NEVER EVER be holding ANYTHING like THAT. EVER. IN A MILLION YEARS.

Me thinks the lady doth protest too much.
Excellent job on the art! I agree, hands are frustrating.

Helga's reaction to my "slander". (yes, I am at work lol)

To be honest I really think that you are better at drawing at her than I am (even that one "How to Draw Helga" thing on that fansite didn't work and this was the same site that taught me how to draw Stinky and Arnold)!

I was first inspired by this video, a short tutorial by artist (and HA staffer) Tuck Tucker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs7uYcMYUa8
Then I looked for images on google to see how some facial expressions are done (in addition to watching some episodes on my computer and screen-capping interesting shots as reference). For me, the goal is to draw her in a variety of states from memory. You may notice that in my most recent submission that Helga's hairline is more prominent than in the other drawings - it's interesting to note how each animation studio draws the character when the episode is in production. Some have a smaller hairline, some have a bigger hairline, some really emphasize her monobrow and leave lots of room on her forehead to play with, etc. It's very cool to see. Personally I like Helga with more hair (like in the recent pic) because it gives my drawings more depth. I just need to work on it a bit more; the thinner hairlines don't even deviate from the original circle I make for her head. Having the thicker hairline means I need to fine-tine my original circle and I'm still trying to get the hang of it.
That said, I've been looking at every possible tutorial/reference guide for an outline, and then go with what works for me... which so far is a combination of things. I can FINALLY draw something presentable! lol

Yeah, Helga's appearance is a little hard to get right on model because she looks different in a lot of episodes early on unless you stick to her season 4/5 look.

Yeah, Helga's art direction has shifted a LOT - watch Arnold's Hat and then Arnold's Christmas in season 1, VERY obvious that two different studios did them. My Helga seems to be mainly season 2-influenced with a blend of 4/5... I'm at a point where I'm getting pretty satisfied with the "look" I enjoy most... just need to work on that bigger, more pronounced head of hair. I LOVE the bigger bangs.

I'm not so much going for strictly "on model" so much as finding the Helga that is most appealing to me. My Helga seems to be mainly season 2-influenced with a blend of 4/5... Re: AlainRacette's Fanart
Well I mean she's still kind of hard to draw (well to me) even if her design has changed over the production of the show (I might practice drawing her over the summer), thanks for the video btw!!

Personally, I find the body more challenging than the head... because I need to make sure the scale is somewhat correct so the head isn't too small (or the body too big! lol) The head I can do consistently in just a few minutes (not including the fussing over eye placement and getting the hair right). The plan is to then sketch the body as quickly as the head and then work on facial expressions and poses. At some point I WILL have no choice but to really knuckle down and work on the hands... no one who draws likes hands

I just wing it all. Hahaha. It's almost impossible for me to actually draw the gang on model though. Partly because it's just difficult and partly because some of it clashes with how I like things to look aesthetically.

And that's part of the fun! Finding your own style while remaining true to the character. I don't know where I heard it, but "if you can recognize the character, then it's on model." So that leaves interpretation a WIDE OPEN ballgame hehe. We all have our little flairs that make our versions different, like comparing a Craig Bartlett Helga and a Tuck Tucker Helga. I love seeing the little nuances everyone brings into their drawings.
Oh, and being bored at work helps. My Helga is like a party trick to them haha.

Man... This looks really good. Hand-drawn Art has always been my favourite! If had any skill whatsoever I would definitely give it a try... To bad I suck
