If you could ask Craig Bartlett anything, what would it be? Empty If you could ask Craig Bartlett anything, what would it be?

Every time I listen to one of Arun Mehta's interviews with Craig Bartlett, where he asks questions the fans sent it, I always think about how "I'll be sure to send in a question next time!" I don't know if there will be a next time, but if there is, this is what I would ask:

So as we all know, Gertie is pretty darn loony. My question is, is she seriously going through dementia, or is it just a way to cheer Arnold up, especially after his parents left him? Or is it a way to mess with Phil? Sometimes in the show, I honestly could go either way. The episode that really brought this question up in my mind is the "Helga Blabs it All" episode. The whole time she was taking a memo while listening to Helga's confession message, and then about to tell Arnold everything, she seemed pretty lucid. She was about to say "Hel-" like she was going to say "Helga," but then she heard a sound from the ceiling, looked around with a blank expression, and then immediately went with "Helen of Troy" and acted all agitated about phone solicitations. Maybe she recalled a previous encounter when Helga snuck into the Boarding House, or she herself was like that when she was a girl.

I don't know, it really just left me in a mental conundrum. I swear, if I ever get to hear in advance when the next Arun Mehta Interview with Craig will be, I will send in this question!

Oh my gosh! I'm totally with you! I can never quite decide. Like sometimes I'm like "oh she is so lucid" and other times I'm like "she's definitely got dementia or something".

But one thing I can say is that I have noticed from my grandma having Alzheimer's disease is that sometimes you can be lucid and other times not...and things can set you off...noises, new people, new settings etc....so it's possible she really does have dementia or something but it's not severe enough to be there all the time and is instead set off by things.

But who knows...if you ever get to ask, let me know! <3

I have wondered the same thing! I like to think that it comes and goes so she has some level of mild dementia, but being the fiery lady she is she mostly uses it as her excuse to do crazy/fun stuff-- "They won't know whether or not I'm faking it so I'm going to do it!" --but, that she definitely has moments of dementia.

I've already asked Craig one thing (it was on the most recent Arun Mehta interview, the question about the haunted train) and I've never really thought of what else I could ask. Maybe a question about if the whole "Nickelodeon didn't allow saying 'die'" thing was a thing? I remember hearing that they had to put that rule in place because of a few shows crossing the line and that one episode where Grandpa was fearing he was nearing the end of his life skirted around explicitly mentioning death.

I would probably ask him about what he feels about the fandom's head canons because there are some really great ones that look canon!

I guess I'd ask him about his creative process if that hasn't been asked already. I love all the subtle hints and backstories he has for all the characters, even for the minor ones (like for example Sid's economic situation). I want to know if he plans that out from the beginning or if characters become more fleshed out over time. Are the other writers prepped for each character's backstory or do they also add things too?

I often wonder if the voice cast cause the writers to go in a certain direction. Like Gerald's sarcastic/ironic tone was IMO perfected by Jamil's vocal acting so I wonder if that shaped his character and the writers perception of him in any way.

Yeah!  That actually makes me think about the other question I would ask him: So I had heard from other interviews that the voice cast had a lot of input into the characters' personalities, and it turned into some sort of direct feedback loop.  I want to know how that worked for Arnold.  I mean, he had three different voice actors throughout the majority of the show (and two more if you count the the pilot and the last two episodes), and I do feel like each guy brought a little different spice to Arnold's character.  How much freedom were these actors given?

I would love to ask what exactly did he put in the spin off series that made nick reject the show.

If I recall correctly, it could have been a mix of Nick and Craig's rocky relationship at the time (since Craig wanted to do projects for other shows) and the fact that depicting things like Miriam going through AA and Olga having a falling out with the family could have been seen as too "dark" for regular Nick.  I remember hearing that he had also approached MTV about it, but the theme was too similar to another show, Daria.  But if there is anything specific....that's a different story I guess! lol

I heard about that he was gonna have Miriam take aa meetings and have olga part ways with her family. But i wanted to know what other specific dark elements did he put into the script pilot. Like something about the dysfunctionalness of helgas other side of the family. Cause if i recall i remember big bob and helga not being too pleased of Miriam visiting her mother and wanting to take care of her.

Ohhhhh! That's a good one! And an old one! I think they may have eventually lifted that because of the episode "Dino Checks Out" where they might have actually used the word "die". But yessss to that being a big rumor back then!!

I feel like Spencer Klein brought a mature sass to Arnold in his later episodes, which I loved. Although, in fairness, Spencer was my favorite Arnold VA because I felt like he had the most distinctive voice. Toran and Phillip were really hard to distinguish. Alex Linz was terrible.

I personally don't know what I'd ask. All the big things I have are silly ship stuff or smaller things that he's honestly probably never even thought about. I know he's been asked several times about the whole Patty/Harold/Rhonda/Curly preferred ships and his answer tends to vary which leads me to believe that he doesn't actually have a preference. I'd like to ask him more about projects he didn't get off the ground, I think. I was neutral on Party Wagon, but man I was bummed that Lenny and Nate never got anywhere. I also would just like to nudge him for more concept art and sketches of all those shows. I guess that's not really a question though!

Oh yeah, the stuff he tried pitching sounded interesting. I also heard he had concept art for The Patakis when he was pitching it to Nick and I would love to know if he still has that.

I just remembered another thing I'd want to ask him, what's the deal with Gertie calling Arnold "Kimba"? Is it a reference to Kimba The White Lion (the old Osamu Tezuka anime/manga that Lion King sorta kinda ripped off) or just a funny nickname?

I always wonder what the most memorable pieces of fan mail were for Craig. The show touches on so many issues that many cartoons never DARED to approach... I wonder if Craig received some moving and emotional pieces of fan mail from people voicing their appreciation that a children's show would cover what HA! did.

Also... how hard was it to get TJM off the ground knowing that a good friend and coworker - Steve Viksten - passed away and was a huge part of the show (as actor and writer)?
