If you like Hey Arnold! you might like... (Recommendation List)
Hey everybody! Since we all like Hey Arnold, I was thinking about creating a little list of similar stuff that captures the spirit of the show in some shape or form. It can be tv shows, movies, books, music, art, pretty much anything. The guideline is pretty loose, so feel free contribute to it with anything you like!
Here's my (very tiny) list so far:
- What Do Fish Have To Do With Anything? by Avi.
Avi was one of my favorite authors growing up and I love the way he captures young characters. The book is a collection of short stories that deals with kids tackling real and often times, difficult issues such as suicide, abandonment, and peer pressure. There are children who are kind, children who are cruel, but each of them are multifaceted just like the cast in Hey Arnold. Some stories even read like a HA episode. Can't recommend this highly enough.
Stand By Me (movie)- One of my favorite movies of all time! Basically it's about a group of boys who go off on an adventure to see a rumored dead body. I know the premise sounds weird but I love the characters and it has that "realness" that I enjoy a lot. Each boy has their issues, either with family or with bullies but they stick together and ultimately it's the journey, not the destination that makes this a coming-of-age classic.
The Sandlot (movie)- It's about kids going on a neighborhood adventure, complete with their own urban legend! Plus this scene used to crack me up as a kid. Edit: Oh man, the kid narrating even sounds like Sid! XD
Afternoon Soul by Gramatik (music)- I'm a huge fan of Jim Lang's music and this little number always reminds me of his music. Which reminds me, if anyone of you listen to music that sounds Jim Lang-y, please list it! I need to broaden my music tastes!

Yea I can see the similarities between HA and The Sandlot, and Stand By Me too
I can't really think of too many toons similar to HA, which I guess is kinda good since it means HA is unique.. but, I guess the only other 90s Nicktoon I can think of that is somewhat similar is Doug.. Even though they're from 2 different time periods (Doug was early 90s and HA was mid-to-late 90s), and they're 2 different settings, obviously Doug wasn't quite the same being that it was set in the suburbs, they do share some similarities, Doug and Skeeter pretty much have the same kind of friendship that Arnold and Gerald do.. HA of course is a lot deeper and more meaningful, but I still loved Doug too
